Thur 10/13 5pm You should have seen these people BEFORE they had their coffee! The Breakfast team. This row of patients had cataract surgery yesterday. They returned to the clinic this morning to get their bandages removed and have their post-op check by the optometrist This is a view of the waiting room this morning first thing. We have yesterday's patients on the left and the begining of today's scheduled patients filling the rest of the room as well as waiting outside. Removing the bandage. This is the part that is so exciting.... when the patients can see again or more clearly.
Dr. Greg Clariday and his surgical team.
I think the pre-op team is waiting for Jim Belushi. Good luck on that. Dr. De La O from Terreon, Mexico
Dr. Vicky Ruiz Patient returning from surgery Dr. De La O's surgical team
So this is how lenses are made. Too much fun

Thur 10/13 11:45 am Good morning from the beautiful town of Guerrero in Chihuahua. It was not quite as cold last night as the first night but it was still chilly this morning when I left for the clinic. As a breakfast crew volunteer, I arrived at the clinic a few minutes after 6am. Already there were patients waiting. Not just one or two but at least three buses were parked and waiting for us to open. Other than the breakfast crew, volunteers were picked up for the clinic at 7am where breakfast awaited. This morning I ventured into surgery. No, they decided that it was probably better if I left the surgery to the doctors but they let me take some pictures of the doctors in action (I will post on a separate page for those of you - like me - who really don't care to be around needles, blood, operating rooms, etc). There are also other things happening in addition to eye testing and surgery. The dentiss are busy, I think they told me that they had 30 cases lined up today. We have a low vision doctor and I think we even have a general practitioner working today. The construction crew continues to work on the dinning hall rest rooms (which I would be helping with if I wasn't updating the web). That being said. I need to get busy editing pictures so that I can post asap. Robert.

10/12 10am Good morning. It is a fabulous day here in Guerrero. Most of the group arrived last evening and drove to the clinic. As we moved farther away from Chihuahua City, the sky cleared and the stars were radiant with the full moon showing us the way. I've been to the clinic many times and each time I am quickly reminded of the beauty we miss back home due to the smog and lights of the city. We settled in for the night and looked forward to the morning. 5:15am - Showered and got dressed. The morning is cold. Thank goodness for the heat. It was still dark outside when about 1/2 dozen of us left for the clinic at 6am to start breakfast. We arrived at the clinic after a five minute drive only to find it bustling with activity. Patients were already lined up outside the clinic. Local volunteers were mobilizing and getting ready for the organized chaos that comes on the first morning. Since we built the new dinning hall in April, I needed to relearn the kitchen and where we keep everything.
7am: The sun is just rising and the rest of group made it to breakfast. It was good to see old friends as well as meet new, first time volunteers. We served up eggs, bacon, sausage, cinnamon toast, biscuits and fruit. That is it for now as it is time to open the clinic for business. |
