We are sad to share that Dr. Susana Barraza passed away after a long fight with cancer. She has been an invaluable supporter and member of the Guerrero Clinic family for 30 years. She was instrumental in building the skills exchange between the US and Mexican Ophthalmologists.  Countless people benefitted from her skills, compassion, and willingness to volunteer to help others. She will be missed as a doctor and friend.

Her sister asked that in lieu of flowers, people continue Dr. Barraza’s legacy at the clinic by donating in her memory to the
"The Guerrero Crystal Foundation" at
P.O. Box 1566, Lake Jackson, TX 77566.

We also want to extend our condolences to our longtime friend and volunteer, Vicki Darden, who lost her mother this past week. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Walter and Luis,

Excerpts from an email written by Sunny Sharma, Rotary District Governor for District 5890, to his district in early December 2010.

Rotarian Walter Branson has been involved with the Guerrero Clinic in Chihuahua, Mexico since the 1980’s through District 5890.  Over the past 30+ years, the Guerrero Clinic and Rotarians from our District have been instrumental in providing millions of dollars in free medical care to the indigent people of the state of Chihuahua Mexico. This project is also the recipient of a 3-H Grant from Rotary International.

The clinic is in the process of being certified by the Mexican government.  Once the clinic is certified, it will be able to receive government funding for each surgery to help operate and run the facility.  This funding would allow the clinic to be self-sufficient and require very little funds from Rotary in the future.

The costs of the renovation are $215,000.  The clinic has received a grant from the Chihuahua Businessman's Club for 80% of the cost in the amount of $172,000.  Unfortunately, that still leaves a balance of $43,000 needed to complete this project and make it sustainable.

I, along with many others, am thankful for all the funds that have been given over the years in support of the Guerrero Clinic. This clinic has provided thousands of Mexican citizens with much needed life saving services and has continued to build public awareness and Rotary’s image over the last 30 years.

Sustainability and self-sufficence are very key milestones in this project.  On behalf of those less fortunate, please once again consider financially helping the Guerrero Clinic to get over this hurdle.  Be sure to speak to your club about participating in this project.  Your support, either personally or through your club, will make a difference in the quality of life of countless people.

Sad news to report

It is with much sadness that I tell you that my good friend and volunteer, Glenn Ridlen, passed away on October 15th. He was such an asset to our clinic. I think everyone was his friend and he would have given the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He will be missed.

Walter

Sept 2010

9/18/2010 Congratulations to Luis and Irasema Cabrera on their new baby boy - Josè Alejandro Cabrera Armendariz. Everyone is healthy and doing fine.

Great News: The Sweeny Rotary Club (District 5890) pledged a
new 5,000 square ft metallic building for the clinic while the Rotary
Club of North Shore (District 5890) has committed to provide the
labor to erect the building.

The Governor of the State of Chihuahua promised to help transport this building to the clinic as well as to help pour its foundation.
